Tips Memelihara Ikan Cupang

Berminat memelihara cupang hias? Untuk mendapatkan jenis yang baik, ada beberapa saran untuk itu.
Peliharalah yang masih bakalan (muda). Asalkan tidak cacat, berkelamin jantan, sehat dan lincah. Perhatikan pula warna tubuhnya yang harus cemerlang, warnanya harmonis, merata, baik di tubuh dan siripnya, serta bermental baja.
Menurut pengalaman para pakar, untuk memperoleh bakalan cupang hias yang baik memang tidak sesulit mendapatkan bakalan cupang aduan. Sebab cupang hias lebih mudah dilihat kelebihan fisiknya ketimbang jenis aduan yang kudu dinilai juga gaya bertarungnya, pukulan andalannya dan perilaku lain yang kadang susah ditebak jika tak melihat sendiri. Sementara cupang aduan belum dijamin kualitasnya hanya dengan melihat sosoknya.
Usia cupang bakalan yang ideal untuk dipelihara berkisar 1,5—5 bulan. Di umur itu, harganya lebih murah ketimbang kalau membeli yang dewasa. Lagi pula menyaksikan ia berkembang dan bertumbuh besar, punya keasyikan tersendiri. Saat ini cupang untuk kontes usianya 3—5 bulan dengan kategori yunior.
Untuk membekali cupang agar memenangkan kontes di kemudian hari, perlu mengikuti latihan. Training itu dilakukan saat ikan berusia ideal yakni 1,5—2 bulan dengan sarana yang ideal bagi perkembangannya. Ibarat melatih calon atlet, sebaiknya sejak dini juga diperkenalkan ”teknik bertanding”.
Langkah-langkahnya sebagai berikut. Bila kita memperoleh dengan cara membeli, cupang dimasukkan ke dalam akuarium soliter dan diberi penyekat antar- akuarium lainnya. Air yang dipakai harus diganti tiap tiga hari sekali. Agar tetap nafsu makannya terjaga, airnya ditambahkan ammonia chloraminei dengan dosis 2 ml tiap 2,5 liter air.
Di pagi hari bukalah sekat setinggi setengah ketinggian air selama sepuluh menit. Ini bertujuan agar cupang saling berhadapan dan terbiasa mengembangkan sirip-siripnya di dalam air.
Sesudah sepuluh menit, sekat kembali ditutup seluruhnya. Barulah diberi pakan sampai kenyang, tetapi usahakan agar tak ada sisa makanan untuk menjaga kebersihan air.
Jika siang hari, sekat kembali dibuka. Biarkan sepuluh menit saling berhadapan. Setelah selesai, sekat ditutup kembali dan pakan diberikan. Sore hari, masukkan ke dalam akuarium cupang betina yang belum siap kawin. Biarkan selama 15—20 menit. Jika betina lebih galak, segera pisahkan. Bila telah selesai, pakan baru diberikan.
Pelatihan lain yang tak kalah penting adalah penjemuran. Namun frekuensinya tidak tiap hari, cukup dua kali seminggu dan lamanya sekitar 15—20 menit, sambil dihadapkan dengan cupang dari kategori lain. Sesudah itu jangan lupa untuk mengganti air dengan penyifonan (disedot), sisakan sepertiganya. Lalu isi dengan air yang sudah diinapkan.
Pelatihan yang ajeg membuat cupang hias lebih siap disertakan dalam kontes ”kecantikan cupang”. Tetapi untuk menjaga keutuhan sirip dan kesehatannya, sebelum dikonteskan, cupang dimasukkan dalam ”pelatnas”, alias dipersiapkan secara khusus. Waktu yang ideal adalah seminggu sebelum kontes.

Ayam Cemani Hitam Legam yang Eksotis

Warna hitam bagi banyak orang berkesan magis dan memiliki kekuatan supra natural. Centeng Belanda atau Si Jampang, kurang berwibawa bila tak berpakaian hitam-hitam. Begitu pula makhluk yang memiliki warna hitam itu pun dianggap memiliki tuah atau kutukan. Ingat dengan kisah-kisah kucing hitam atau burung gagak? Bagaimana dengan ayam cemani yang memiliki bulu, jenger, tulang, daging, kulit, kaki dan taji serbahitam?

Ini yang menarik. Ayam cemani bukan cuma dianggap ayam keramat, namun juga ayam hias yang khas Indonesia. Memang hewan ini konon punya kemampuan menolak bala. Bagi yang mempercayainya jika memakan dagingnya bisa menyembuhkan penyakit tertentu. Kepercayaan akan hal-hal gaib itu kini masih ada di sebagian masyarakat, namun kian menipis. Kini dia lebih sebagai ayam hias yang eksotik dan diburu para hobbies lokal dan mancanegara untuk dikoleksi.
Cemani adalah kata Sanskerta untuk hitam. Jenis ayam ini awalnya disebut ayam kedu. Dalam perkembangan ayam kedu itu terjadi banyak varian yang tidak lagi memiliki warna murni hitam. Sehingga ayam kedu yang masih tetap mempertahankan kehitam legamnya disebut oleh para hobbies sebagai ayam cemani.

Asal Usul
Dari mana ia berasal? Ada beberapa dugaan, namun yang pasti dia berasal dari Kedu, Jawa Tegah. Makanya satwa ini dikenal juga sebagai ayam kedu. Satwa ini mulai naik daun ketika pertama kali tampil dalam pekan raya di Semarang tahun 1926. Pemiliknya Tjokromihardjo, lurah Desa Kalikuto, Grabak, di Magelang. Saat itu wilayah itu masih masuk dalam Karesidenan Kedu.
Menurut data, ayam kepala desa itu pernah tampil di Surabaya tahun 1924 dalam sebuah pekan raya. Saat itu ayam itu dikenal sebagai ayam yang berwarna hitam saja. Tapi kemudian panitia lomba satwa di Semarang menjuluki ayam hitam legam milik Tjokromihardjo sebagai ayam kalikuto, karena berasal dari daerah itu.
Lucunya, pemilik menolak nama itu. Lalu diusulkan sendiri agar dinamakan ayam kedu saja sebab memang berasal dari karesidenan tersebut. Usul tersebut diterima panitia maka resmilah ayam yang berasal dari Kalikuto berjuluk ayam kedu.

Genetika
Ayam kedu yang ikut dalam kontes tersebut, menurut sebuah telaah, berasal dari keturunan ayam kampung yang dibeli dari daerah Gunung Sumbing. Ayam ini cukup besar dan diduga hasil silangan liar antara ayam Inggris yang diboyong orang pada era Raffles berkuasa (1811-1816).
Kala itu, konon ada orang Inggris yang membawa dua ekor ayam betina dan seekor jantan asing, yang diduga termasuk jenis ayam ternak Dorking. Mereka dipelihara di daerah Dieng. Mungkin karena kandangnya sederhana dan kurang pengawasan, ayam-ayam itu menyeleweng dan berbaur dengan ayam kampung setempat. Dari keturunannya lebih lanjut terciptalah ayam lokal unggul. Oleh masyarakat setempat ayam ini yang disebut sebagai ayam kedu.
Sementara telaah lain menyebutkan ayam hitam milik Tjokromihardjo bukanlah asli ayam kedu. Sebab ia merupakan hasil kawin silang antara ayam kampung hasil belian dengan ayam australorp, yang penyilangannya dilakukan sendiri oleh pemiliknya.

Legenda
Tapi ada legenda yang juga sampai saat ini masih hidup di sana yakni tentang asal-muasalnya ayam kedu. Konon, kehadiran satwa ini tak disengaja. Menurut legenda sebelum lahirnya kota Temanggung, hidup seorang pertapa yang sakti mandraguna yakni Ki Ageng Makukuhan, yang hobi mengoleksi ayam serba hitam, dan hanya paruhnya yang berwarna putih.
Suatu hari, ketika sedang bertapa di sebuah kuburan keramat di wilayah Kedu, dia memperoleh wangsit untuk mengobati penyakit putra Panembahan Hargo Pikukuh yang bernama Lintang Katon, yakni diobati dengan ayam itu. Bagaimana proses selanjutnya tidak terlalu jelas, namun akhirnya penyakit yang diderita anak semata wayang itu sembuh. Oleh karena tuah yang dimiliki ayam itu akhirnya dijadikan lambang kesembuhan.
Maka tak heran bila tradisi itu kini masih hidup dan dipercaya. Ayam ini memang sering digunakan untuk hal-hal yang bersifat magis. Misalnya untuk upacara ruwatan, pembangunan pabrik, jembatan atau gedung-gedung bertingkat agar terhindar dari bencana. Tapi penggunaannya juga untuk syarat penyembuhan orang sakit. ”Misalnya untuk penyakit akibat santet,” Raharjo (31), pedagang ayam kedu di Pasar Pramuka, Jakarta.

Hampir Punah
Binatang ini di tempat asalnya kini yakni di Desa Kedu, Kecamatan Kedu, Kabupaten Temanggung, tersebar di tiga pedukuhan yakni Kahuripan, Sentono dan Beji. Menurut data, populasi ketika awal tahun 1984 tercatat sekitar 5.000 ekor, namun di akhir tahun meningkat menjadi 8.500 ekor. Jumlah ini pada tahun 1997 melorot drastis tinggal 2.000 ekor. Ini dikarenakan masyarakat setempat kurang dibekali pengetahuan sehingga ketika wabah datang, mereka tidak tahu bagaimana menangkalnya.
Pemerintah daerah setempat akhirnya mengambil inisiatif untuk mengatasi persoalan ini. Program pelestarian dicanangkan lewat pemerintah desa dengan mendirikan kelompok peternak bernama ”Makukuhan,” yang diambil dari nama pertapa sakti itu. Kelompok ini awalnya berjumlah 35 orang. Mereka memelihara ayam sekitar 1.500 ekor. Hingga sekarang peternak di sana bisa hidup layak dari ayam-ayam hitam itu.

Kolektor
Menurut Raharjo, permintaan akan ayam ini lumayan besar. Umumnya untuk keperluan upacara, namun tak sedikit pula yang membeli untuk dijadikan koleksi. Bagi kolektor atau hobbies, ayam ini berkesan angker dan gagah dengan bulu-bulunya yang serba hitam pekat. ”Apalagi kalau pagi-pagi berkokok, suasananya lantang,” ujar Ibnu Saptaji (34) hobbies pemula yang bermukim di Pondok Gede, Bekasi
Menurut Ibnu, dia tidak mempercayai soal kegaiban di seputar ayam ini. Dia lebih melihatnya sebagai sarana penghilang stres. Kalau pagi sebelum berangkat ke kantor, dengan membersihkan kandang, memberikan makan, dan mendengarkan kukuruyuknya seraya memandanginya maka hati bapak tiga anak itu merasa damai. Sehingga, menurutnya, tiap hari diusahakan untuk melongok ke kandang ayam itu.
Begitu juga Jan Steverink, warga Belanda yang telah tiga kali datang ke Indonesia, hanya khusus berburu ayam ini untuk dipelihara di negaranya. Kedatangannya yang terakhir adalah tahun 2000. Dia bercita-cita ingin melestarikan dan memperkenalkan ayam khas Indonesia di Eropa. Tujuan lain sebetulnya ia ingin meneliti sampai sejauh mana penyimpangan warna terjadi. Sebab dari anak-anak ayam menetas jika mencapai usia tertentu, yang betul-betul hitam pekat hanya 50 persen. Maka dengan kegiatannya yang tampak sepele itu, Jan ingin membuat jalur murni ayam cemani. Sehingga pada akhirnya jika sesama ayam ini dikawinkan setelah beberapa generasi maka akan menjadi ayam cemani hitam pekat tanpa ada lagi variasi warna yang keluar.
Memelihara ayam ini di Kedu, tambah Raharjo yang berasal dari Magelang, seperti memelihara ayam biasa yakni masih tradisional. Ayam diumbar dari pagi sampai sore untuk mencari makanan sendiri, namun pemilik suka memberi dedak sebagai makanan tambahan. ”Jadi ayam ini cukup tahan penyakit, dan gempal,” ujarnya.

Warna Berubah
Bulu-bulu hias yang jantan, bakal keluar ketika ayam berusia 4 bulan. Sampai pada umur 5 bulan warnanya masih hitam, namun lambat laun bermunculan warna lain. Bisa kuning, merah, merah coklat, atau kuning coklat. Saat umur 1,5 tahun bulu hiasnya berubah menjadi merah merona.
Di antara ayam kedu hitam ini, salah satu varietas dikenal sebagai ayam cemani. Inilah yang dianggap primadona ayam kedu karena segalanya serba hitam. Baik bulu, kulit, daging sampai ketulang-tulangnya hitam pekat. Ayam cemani harganya relatif mahal karena langka dan dicari orang.
Harga ayam cemani yang hitam pekat, menurut Raharjo, bisa mencapai jutaan, namun yang biasa-biasa saja paling mahal Rp 750 ribu seekornya. Sedang yang remaja Rp 100 ribu per ekor. Pelanggan kolektor pemula lebih suka membeli yang remaja. Karena ketika dewasa, ayam berperilaku jinak. Sedang yang kolektor serius lebih suka mencari yang dewasa sebab sudah bisa diketahui kualitasnya, apakah berbulu hitam pekat atau ada variasi warna lain.
”Saya punya langganan paranormal, yang sering memesan ayam cemani untuk keperluan upacara,” lagi tutur Raharjo. Dia tidak tahu ayam itu akan diapakan oleh langganannya, yang dia tahu untuk mengobati penyakit. Dan bagaimana cara pengobatan dengan ayam cemani, dia tidak tahu pasti. Tapi kalau pun dimasak opor, ayam ini enak seperti rasa daging ayam lainnya. Anehnya, tambahnya, kuah opor menjadi berwarna hitam juga seperti memasak ikan cumi yang kuahnya berubah hitam. Nah lho!

Mengenal “Pick up” Alat Penting pada Gitar

JAKARTA – Bagi seorang gitaris yang lebih sering menggunakan gitar elektris tentu paham dengan spesifikasi yang ada pada alat musik tersebut. Berbeda dari gitar akustik, komponen gitar elektris memang lebih ruwet. Sebab banyak unsur yang menentukan kualitas suara yang dihasilkan pada alat musik tersebut.

Selain badan gitar dan dawai, alat yang paling penting pada gitar elektrik adalah pick up. Apa itu pick up? Sesuai dengan namanya, pick up gitar bertugas “mengambil” suara atau getaran dawai. Pick up adalah sebuah transducer yang akan mengubah getar dawai menjadi energi listrik, lalu diteruskan melalui kabel dan masuk ke dalam amplifier. Pick up ini terletak menempel pada di tengah badan gitar dan jaraknya berdekatan dengan dawai sehingga mampu merekam atau mengambil suara getaran dawai.
Secara fisik, pick up terdiri dari 2 jenis yaitu single coil yang terdiri dari satu pick up dan humbucker yang merupakan gabungan dua pick up. Dari letaknya, pick up bisa dibedakan menjadi pick up neck dan pick up bridge. Sesuai namanya, pick up neck letaknya berdekatan dengan leher (neck) gitar. Sedangkan pick up bridge letaknya berdekatan dengan bridge/tremolo gitar. Kedua pick up ini mempunyai frekuensi yang berbeda. Biasanya pick up bridge mempunyai output yang lebih besar karena getaran dawai akan semakin berkurang ketika mendekati bridge.
Selain itu ada dua jenis pick up yang berbeda, yaitu pick up aktif dan pasif. Pick up aktif adalah pick up yang sudah dilengkapi pre-amp di dalamnya. Pre-amp ini digunakan untuk mendapatkan gain lebih tinggi, membentuk tone, dan mengurangi impedansi output. Kelebihan pick up ini ada pada respons treble yang lebih baik dengan noise yang lebih rendah. Untuk mengaktifkannya diperlukan sebuah baterai.
Sedangkan pick up pasif tidak dilengkapi dengan sirkuit elektronik apa pun di dalamnya dan tidak membutuhkan baterai untuk mengaktifkannya. Umumnya pick up yang ada saat Anda membeli gitar elektris atau akustik adalah pick up jenis ini.
Kadang banyak juga gitaris yang masih belum puas dengan pick up yang ada di gitarnya. Alasannya beragam, seperti kurang puas dengan karakter suara yang dihasilkan oleh pick up yang ada pada gitarnya, atau ingin meniru spesifikasi milik gitaris idolanya, atau malah fanatik dengan merek pick up tertentu. Menurut Ade Bagus, gitaris kelompok Clorophyl yang beberapa waktu lalu tampil di ajang International Java Jazz Festival 2005, biasanya gitaris mengganti pick upnya karena kepuasan pribadi. “Sesuai karakter suara yang dibutuhkan,” katanya. Awalnya ia sendiri mengubah spesifikasi pick up karena tertarik dengan karakter suara gitaris idolanya, Paul Gilbert dan Steve Vai.
Setiap produsen gitar umumnya memang memproduksi sendiri pick up-nya. Namun ada beberapa produsen yang merupakan spesialis pick up seperti DiMarzio, Seymour Duncan, dan EMG. Sampai saat ini produsen-produsen tersebut terus mengembangkan kualitas pick up buatannya. Ini peluang para gitaris untuk memperbaiki karakter atau kualitas suara sesuai yang diinginkannya dengan mengganti pick up sesuai kebutuhan.

Spesifikasi
Pada dasarnya pick up terdiri dari dua komponen, yaitu magnet dan gulungan kawat tembaga yang disebut coil. Gulungan ini melilit ribuan kali pada tiap bobbin. Perbedaan antara besar bobbin, jumlah gulungan, dan ukuran kawat tembaga yang digunakan juga akan memberikan perbedaan pada hasil akhir cara kerja pick up. Jumlah lilitan kabel tembaga yang terlilit di sekitar kumparan juga akan mempengaruhi tampilan pick up dan tone keseluruhan gitar. Jika terlalu banyak memiliki lingkaran, akan mempunyai tingkat output yang tinggi. Sebaliknya, pick up dengan lingkaran yang kecil akan menciptakan suara yang lemah dan tipis.
Ada beberapa jenis magnet yang digunakan untuk pick up gitar. Tapi pada dasarnya dibagi menjadi dua bagian besar, yaitu ceramic dan alnico. Alnico merupakan magnet yang terdiri dari gabungan aluminium, nikel, dan cobalt. Magnet termasuk salah satu yang cukup memberi kontribusi pada tone. Magnet inilah yang akan menentukan seberapa besar medan magnet yang akan tercipta dari getaran dawai. Magnet Ceramic membuat pick up lebih powerfull dan mempunyai dinamika yang lebih lebar. Magnet jenis ini menghasilkan medan magnet yang lebih hebat dibandingkan dengan alnico.
Beberapa produsen juga menyertakan tone guide pada lembar spesifikasinya. Biasanya berupa besar kecilnya repro masing-masing rentan frekuensi. Misalnya pick up buatan DiMarzio, yaitu Super Distortion, tone guidenya yakni bass 8.0, mid 7,5 dan treble 5,5. Ini akan sangat membantu dalam menentukan pilihan pick up.
Mengganti pick up memang bukan perkara yang mudah jika tidak diikuti dengan pengetahuan tentang pick up itu sendiri. Jangan terburu-buru ingin mengganti pick up hanya karena ingin mengikuti karakter suara yang dihasilkan oleh gitaris idola. Sebaiknya memang harus diteliti terlebih dahulu, apakah spesifikasi pick up itu yang benar-benar membuat karakter suara itu terdengar berbeda. Jangan lupa, selain faktor pick up, masih ada beberapa faktor lain yang mempengaruhi karakter suara, seperti gitar, dawai, sound effect, amplifier, sampai ke permainan gitaris itu sendiri

As well as offering comprehensive performance through the combination of wide-range zoom lens, image stabilisation and resolution, the P80 incorporates technologies that deliver outstanding results in specific areas. Three unique Nikon innovations that are designed for group and individual portraits (Face-Priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix and D-Lighting) are supported by the addition of high ISO sensitivity for situations when lighting levels are low.

For additional creative options after taking a picture, the ‘Optimize Image’ feature allows users to take monochrome photographs using a choice of four different filters for effect, while still saving the original colour version of the image.

The COOLPIX P80 is the ideal camera for the photo enthusiast who wants to have the convenience of a point-and-shoot camera with full manual control, and all possible options in-between. With 15 scene modes that are pre-configured for situations such as night time, fireworks, seaside, panoramas and sports photography, the camera can be preset to give the best results in many common settings. EOS 450D: get ready to play

Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 24 January 2008: Canon today launches its latest D-SLR, the EOS 450D. Featuring a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and a new 9-point AF system, the model presents consumers with an unprecedented level of image quality and versatility at this end of the market.

The EOS 450D employs features already proven in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor and a redesigned menu system that enables features such as direct control of Speedlite flash units from the camera LCD. A choice of 13 custom functions allows the photographer to customise the camera to their shooting style.

Image data is processed at 14 bits for Delivering a burst rate of 3.5 frames per second, the DIGIC III processor works with the image buffer to handle up to 53 JPEGs (6 in RAW) without interruption.

Built for better photos

The EOS 450D is designed to make photography a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience. Housed in a compact body that weighs less than 475 grams, the camera features an improved grip design that provides a natural, ergonomic fit with the user’s hands. A large, bright viewfinder makes image composition clearer and more comfortable. The menu system inherited from professional EOS cameras uses a simplified tab structure that does away with scrolling. It includes a user-defined My Menu tab for instant access to frequently used settings.

Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects. The new Auto Lighting Optimiser corrects brightness and contrast during image processing, while improving skin tones in portraits by ensuring correct exposure for faces. Photographers can also enable additional noise reduction for shots captured at high ISO speeds.

Live View

Available for the first time on a Canon consumer D-SLR, Live View mode makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when shooting from a tripod. The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth, 30fps video feed on the 3.0” LCD, which is 50% brighter than the screen of the EOS 400D. A grid line display and live histogram can be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Two types of auto focus are available: Quick AF flips the camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor; Live AF uses the image contrast data to focus - a method familiar to anyone upgrading from a compact digital camera.

For studio environments, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.

Other improvements

The EOS 450D complements its headline features with a host of smaller improvements that enhance the photographic experience. The viewfinder now displays all key exposure information including ISO speed. The addition of spot metering (4% of viewfinder) allows for greater control over exposure in tricky lighting conditions. PictBridge functionality has been expanded so that photographers can correct horizons and add picture effects before printing. A new high capacity battery extends shooting time on a single charge to a maximum of 500 shots.

Software

The EOS 450D is supplied with a comprehensive software suite that provides everything the photograph needs to manage and process images. This includes Digital Photo Professional (DPP), a powerful RAW converter that provides complete RAW image processing control. DPP also integrates with camera features such as Dust Delete Data and Picture Styles. The supplied Picture Style Editor software can be used to create custom Picture Styles for fine control over colour display. The camera also comes with EOS Utility, Image/Zoom Browser and Photostitch.

Samsung Glyde Review Verdict: Get Yourself a Voyager

The Samsung Glyde was announced for Verizon Wireless today. The $249 phone, after a $50 rebate, has a 2.8” haptic touchscreen and a full QWERTY keypad that slides out from under it.

We liked the messaging capabilities of the Samsung Glyde, but were frustrated by its confusing and often unresponsive touchscreen and user interface. The LG Voyager costs $50 more and offers a second display, an onscreen QWERTY keypad, and support for V Cast Mobile TV. And the upcoming Samsung Instinct at least tries to be innovative with its easier-to-customize favorites menu and voice-activated local search, although that phone lacks a physical keyboard.

Other features of the Glyde include support for V Cast Music, Video, and Navigator for GPS. You can even add an 8GB microSD card to store your own songs for playback on the go.

BlackBerry Controller

The original BlackBerrys featured a scroll wheel on the right side, which enabled users to navigate menus and scroll through e-mails and Web pages. With the advent of the 8000 series, that wheel was replaced with a trackball located just underneath the screen.

While a new generation of users have embraced the new navigation device, many old-school BlackBerry addicts wish RIM would bring back the scroll wheel. Point: Why a BlackBerry Trackball is the Only Way to Go

I never wanted a BlackBerry until they came out with the Pearl, which sported a pearl-esque trackball. Why? Because the scroll wheel found on the right edge of BlackBerrys prior was more awkward than a 12-year-old boy heading into puberty. Those who use BlackBerrys with scroll wheels seem to look like they have some sort of deformity; their right index finger is always unnaturally extended to the right of the device.

Mr. Jeffrey Wilson will try and convince you otherwise, but putting a wheel on the side of a BlackBerry has never made sense. It almost seemed like an outgrowth of older technology, like beepers. For those that don’t remember beepers, you would hold this ancient contraption and use a side wheel to scroll through the numbers. There is no doubt that the advent of the trackball pushed RIM’s BlackBerry into the forefront. Here is why I could never imagine using a BlackBerry with a scroll wheel and why I’ll never give up on my precious little gem.

Ergonomics Trump All: The scroll wheel design is not conducive to thumb-typing and does not make for comfortable hand positioning on the device. With the scroll wheel, using your phone with your left hand was never really possible. If you were holding your BlackBerry in your left hand, you would have to constantly adjust your positioning: To type, you must put your thumb on the keys, but then to toggle the menu, you have to move your hand around to the right side of the device to scroll using the wheel. With the trackball positioned front and center on the device, you can type with one hand; you simply move your thumb from the keyboard slightly up to maneuver the trackball.

Sure using a wheel device with two hands is tolerable, but you can never have a firm grip on the device since you have to keep your index finger on the right side to control the wheel. With the ball you can firmly and comfortably hold the device in the palm of your hand and that ball is always within thumb’s reach.

The Need for Speed: How do people move within menus with a scroll wheel? There is no doubt that you can navigate faster with the ball, because you gain four-way directional controls for moving through applications or navigating a Web page.

You also gain much more precision with the trackball; you can accurately navigate to the application you need in the main menu with short ball rolls. Even better, when you are writing up an e-mail or SMS message you can easily move the cursor to the right or left by horizontally rotating the ball.

Acer Aspire 8920G

The gorgeous full-HD 18.4-inch (1920 x 1080-pixel resolution) CineCyrstal 16:9 display brought out the fine detail and lifelike skin tones in Denzel Washington’s face, while the CineSurround 5.1 speakers, Dolby Home Theater technology, and Tube CineBass booster added equally as impressive audio. Above the display resides the 640 x 480 Acer Crystal Eye webcam for taking snaps of yourself or making video calls in conjunction with the integrated mic. Images taken with it were a notch above other webcams as we could pick up fine detail.

Large Keyboard

The 17.4 x 11.8 x 1.5-inch 8920G served up a spacious keyboard and number pad that featured responsive keys. To the immediate right of the number pad are keys for activating/deactivating the 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Internet Explorer, Windows Mail, and activating/deactivating the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR signal. Acer also includes a biometric fingerprint reader for the security conscious.

Dual Hard Drives, Many Ports

Our configuration came with a 2.6-GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, and dual hard drives totaling 320GB that kept us moving at brisk pace while we were listening to music in Windows Media Player 11, surfing the web, and engaging in a videochats. Under the hood runs Nvidia GeForce 9650M GS graphics card with 512MB of memory. The 8920G includes a host connections including a 6-in-1 card reader, 4 USB 2.0 ports, HMDI, VGA, headphone and microphone jacks (with S/PDIF support), line-in, Ethernet, modem, and an ExpressCard/54 slot.

All in all, the 8.8-pound Acer Aspire 8920G looks to be stellar PC. Check back soon for a full review after we send this puppy to our labs for benchmarking.
